Done correctly, the result looks like polished stone: variegated, luminous, and impossible to reproduce with paint.

The technique traces back to ancient Rome and was revived in 15th-century Venice, where builders needed a lightweight, decorative finish that could imitate marble without the structural cost. The recipe hasn't changed much since. What has changed is the range of finishes now available in the Venetian plaster family — from the mirror-like polish of Lucidato to the waterproof, hand-rubbed texture of Tadelakt.

Lucidato

Tadelakt

Polished Lime Plaster

A broader category that includes traditional lime finishes with a softer, more matte look than Lucidato. Beautiful for larger wall areas where you want texture and depth without the reflection. Common in bedrooms and hallways.

Microcement

Not strictly Venetian plaster, but often specified alongside it. Cement-based, thin, and applicable to floors, walls, and countertops. Sleek modern finish with an industrial edge — pairs well with Venetian plaster walls elsewhere in the home.

How Venetian Plaster Is Installed

Venetian plaster is a craft finish. The material is only half the equation — the rest is in the hand of the applicator. Here's what a proper installation looks like on our jobsites:

1. Surface Preparation

Walls must be clean, flat, and primed with a bonding primer suitable for lime plaster. Cracks are patched, drywall joints are refinished, and any texture is skimmed smooth. Poor prep shows through every layer, so this stage isn't rushed.

2. Base Coat

The first coat of tinted plaster goes on with a steel trowel in short, overlapping strokes. This coat establishes the color foundation and levels the surface. It's left to cure before the next layer.

3. Second and Third Coats

Additional thin coats build depth and movement. The trowel angle, pressure, and stroke direction all shape the final look — this is where an experienced applicator matters. More coats mean more depth; Lucidato may take four or five, Marmorino usually two or three.

4. Burnishing

Once the final coat has set, the surface is burnished with the flat of the trowel or a soft cloth. Burnishing compresses the lime, closes the surface, and brings up the sheen. This is what makes Venetian plaster look like stone instead of paint.

5. Sealing (Where Required)

Wet-area installations (Tadelakt showers, backsplashes) are sealed with natural olive-oil soap, which reacts with the lime to create a waterproof surface. Dry-area installations may receive a light wax for extra depth and protection.

Care and Maintenance

Venetian plaster is low-maintenance but not zero-maintenance. Dust with a soft, dry cloth. For marks, a barely damp microfiber usually lifts them without leaving a trace — lime plaster is forgiving. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners; they can dull the burnish. Sealed Tadelakt surfaces in showers get re-soaped once a year to maintain water resistance. That's it. No repainting every few years. No touching up scuffs. The finish ages gracefully rather than showing wear.

What Venetian Plaster Costs
