Feature Walls
The One Wall That Changes Everything — Custom Feature Walls by Eary Construction
You walk into a room and something stops you. It's not the furniture. It's not the lighting. It's the wall. A feature wall done right has that effect — it anchors the room, creates a focal point that draws the eye, and communicates something about the people who live there that no paint color ever could.
At Eary Construction in San Antonio, custom feature walls are one of our signature specialties. We build them from scratch — from the framing and backing to the final trim and lighting — and every one is designed specifically for the room, the layout, and what the homeowner wants to feel when they walk through the door.
Whether you want the warmth of shiplap and wood beams, the high-end drama of full-wall marble porcelain with a linear electric fireplace, a modern entertainment center with lighted built-in shelving, or the on-trend look of fluted slat panels with a backlit stone backdrop — we build it. Custom. Here in San Antonio.
What Is a Feature Wall?
A feature wall (also called an accent wall or statement wall) is a single wall in a room that is intentionally designed to stand apart from the others. It becomes the visual anchor of the space — often housing a fireplace, entertainment center, art installation, or architectural detail that makes the room feel designed rather than just furnished.
Why Homeowners in San Antonio Are Investing in Feature Walls
The interest in custom feature walls has surged over the last several years, and it's not hard to see why. Cookie-cutter homes — especially in San Antonio's newer developments in Stone Oak, Helotes, Schertz, and the far northwest side — often have open floor plans that feel undefined. The rooms are large but lack character. A custom feature wall solves that immediately.
Beyond aesthetics, a well-executed feature wall adds real value. Buyers walking through a home with a custom entertainment wall, a built-in lighted shelving unit, or a dramatic stone-and-slat fireplace focal point react differently than they do to a blank drywall room. These builds photograph well, show well, and are one of the most effective ways to distinguish a home in the San Antonio market.
- Creates an immediate focal point in open floor plans
- Adds custom, built-in character that feels permanent and high-end
- Integrates entertainment, storage, and decor into a single cohesive design
- Dramatically increases the visual impact and perceived value of a room
- Can incorporate functional elements: electric fireplace, TV mounting, shelving, cable management
- Photographs beautifully — important for resale and short-term rental listings

1. Shiplap and Farmhouse Feature Walls
Shiplap is everywhere for good reason. Horizontal or vertical tongue-and-groove plank walls — painted crisp white, warm greige, or left in a natural stained finish — bring immediate warmth and texture to a space. When paired with wood floating shelves, a recessed fireplace, and decorative ceiling beams, the result is the kind of living room that feels like it belongs in a magazine.
We've built shiplap fireplace walls that combine the planked backdrop with a stained wood mantel, board-and-batten accent paneling below, and a TV mount recessed flush into the surface so the TV disappears into the design rather than sitting on top of it. The chandelier, the beam, the plank — it's a complete look we can build wall-to-wall.
2. Fluted Slat Panel Walls
If there's a single design element defining high-end interior builds right now, it's the fluted slat panel — vertical grooved panels that add dimension, shadow lines, and a sense of depth to any wall. We install them in painted MDF (white, charcoal, black, or any custom color), natural wood tones, and everything in between.
Slat panels work best as a backdrop for a larger feature: centered stone tile accent, a recessed TV niche, a linear electric fireplace, or a full entertainment center flanked by lighted tower shelving. The combination of the clean vertical lines of the slat panel with the organic pattern of a marble tile inset is one of the most striking looks in contemporary residential design — and it's one we do regularly across San Antonio.
3. Marble and Stone Tile Feature Walls
Large-format porcelain tile in marble patterns has transformed what's possible for feature walls. We're talking about tile panels 24" x 48", 24" x 120", or larger — installed with minimal grout lines to create the look of continuous slabs of stone across an entire wall or fireplace surround.
We work with Calacatta gold (white with warm gold veining), black Marquina (dramatic black with white veining), Statuario (soft white with subtle gray movement), and bold artistic patterns that function as oversized wall art. Paired with a linear electric fireplace recessed directly into the tile and a floating wood mantel shelf, these builds stop traffic.
4. Custom Built-In Entertainment Walls
The built-in entertainment wall is the most transformative feature wall we offer. Instead of a TV on a stand in a room that doesn't know what it wants to be, you get a floor-to-ceiling built installation: custom shelving towers on either side, a centered TV niche, lower media console with storage, and integrated LED strip lighting that glows from behind the shelves and along the base.
We've built these in natural light wood with warm amber lighting for a Scandinavian feel, in painted white with a Calacatta marble center panel for a transitional luxury look, and in dramatic dark finishes — espresso cabinetry paired with black stone tile and color-changing LED strips. Every one is custom to the wall dimensions, the room, and what the client actually needs to store and display.
5. Electric Fireplace Feature Walls
A fireplace changes the emotional character of a room. The problem is that adding a real gas or wood-burning fireplace to an existing home is a major construction project involving permits, venting, and structural work. A linear electric fireplace is a fraction of the cost, requires no gas line or chimney, and creates essentially the same visual impact.
We design and build complete fireplace feature walls around linear electric inserts in standard widths from 48" to 84". The surround can be anything: white shiplap with a live-edge mantel for the farmhouse look, full-wall black stone tile for drama, fluted slat panels with a marble inset for modern luxury, or board and batten painted bright white for a clean traditional feel. The fireplace itself is recessed into the wall, framed cleanly, and wired in. Add floating shelves above or flanking, and you have a room centerpiece that didn't exist before.
6. Board and Batten / Wainscoting Trim Walls
Not every feature wall needs to be a full construction project. Wainscoting and board-and-batten trim walls add immediate architectural interest using paint and molding — no tile, no heavy framing, no fireplace required. We install flat or raised panel grids at chair-rail height or run them full height, painted in crisp white, soft sage, deep navy, or whatever fits the room.
This style works especially well in dining rooms, entryways, hallways, and home offices where you want a polished, finished look that reads as "custom" without a major renovation. It's also one of the fastest ways to elevate a bedroom that feels flat and generic.
7. Mixed-Material Statement Walls
Our most dramatic builds combine multiple materials and elements into a single cohesive design: fluted slat panels running wall-to-wall, a large stone tile panel centered behind the TV, a linear electric fireplace below, flanking lighted tower shelving, a floating media console, and LED strip lighting behind the shelves and along the base. The result looks like a custom installation you'd see in a luxury model home — because that's exactly what it is.
We've done this in virtually every combination: white slat panels with gold-veined marble and warm white lighting; dark charcoal panels with black stone tile and blue-flame electric fireplace; natural oak tones with travertine-look porcelain and amber recessed lighting. Each one starts with your room and what you want it to feel like.
Feature Wall Design Elements — What Goes Into the Build
Most custom feature walls combine several design elements. Here's what we work with:
| Design Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Fluted Slat Panels | Custom-installed vertical grooved panels in white, natural wood, charcoal, or any painted finish. The defining element of the modern feature wall. |
| Large-Format Stone Tile | Porcelain panels up to 5 ft tall in marble patterns — Calacatta gold, black Marquina, Statuario white, and more. Installed seamlessly for a high-end look. |
| Linear Electric Fireplaces | Recessed or surface-mount electric fireplaces in 48", 60", 72", and 84" widths. Color-changing flame effects, remote control, and zero venting required. |
| Built-In Lighted Shelving | Custom shelving towers with integrated LED strip lighting — warm white or color-changing. Open cubbies, floating shelves, and lower storage benches. |
| Floating Hardwood Mantels | Raw-edge, stained, or painted wood mantels that sit above the fireplace — add warmth to any stone or tile build. |
| Shiplap & Plank Cladding | Horizontal or vertical tongue-and-groove or shiplap boards painted white, greige, or in natural wood tones. |
| Board & Batten / Wainscoting | Painted trim panel grids that give a formal, finished look. Classic raised panel or modern flat-profile depending on your style. |
| Floating Media Consoles | Custom floating or floor-standing media consoles with open shelving, closed cabinets, and clean cable management. |
| Decorative Wood Beams | Painted or stained faux or real wood ceiling beams that complete the look — especially with vaulted or cathedral ceilings. |
| Integrated LED Strip Lighting | Recessed LED strips behind shelving, under mantels, and along slat panels for a dramatic backlit glow effect. |
Our Process — From Idea to Finished Wall
We don't need a professional interior designer on your end — that's our job. Here's how a typical feature wall project comes together:
- Consultation — We walk the room with you, look at the wall dimensions, talk about what you want the room to feel like, and discuss your budget range. We'll show you reference photos of similar builds we've done.
- Design & Material Selection — We propose a design concept with material options: which slat panel finish, which stone tile pattern, which fireplace size and frame, how to handle the shelving and lighting. You pick what fits your vision.
- Flat-Rate Quote — We quote the project as a flat-rate job. You know the full price before we start — no surprises, no open-ended hourly billing on a project of this scope.
- Build — Our crew handles everything: framing and backing, tile installation, panel installation, fireplace rough-in and wiring, shelving, lighting, TV mount, and final trim and paint. We handle cleanup before we leave.
- Final Walkthrough — We walk the finished wall with you, go over how everything works (lighting controls, fireplace remote, any integrated features), and make sure every detail is right before we call the job complete.
How long does a feature wall take?
Most custom feature walls take 2 to 5 days depending on complexity. A shiplap wall with floating shelves might be done in 1 to 2 days. A full entertainment wall with stone tile, electric fireplace, built-in shelving, and LED lighting is typically 3 to 5 days. We'll give you a timeline estimate with your quote.

At Eary Construction, this is what we do.

- We handle every trade involved: framing, tile, carpentry, electrical rough-in, lighting, trim, and paint
- Every project is quoted flat-rate — you know the number upfront
- We design the wall with you — you don't need to show up with architectural drawings

- Our builds are built to last: proper backing, correct fasteners, professional tile installation
Common Questions
Can you do a feature wall in any room?
Yes. Living rooms and primary bedrooms are the most common, but we've done feature walls in dining rooms, home offices, entryways, game rooms, and covered patios. If there's a wall and a vision, we can build it.
Do I need to already have a fireplace?
No. Linear electric fireplaces require only a standard 110V or 220V outlet — no gas line, no chimney, no permits in most cases. We frame the cavity, install the unit, and wire it in. You get the look and feel of a built-in fireplace without the complexity of a traditional installation.
What does a custom feature wall cost?
Cost varies significantly based on size, materials, and complexity. A simple shiplap or board-and-batten wall might start in the $1,500 to $3,500 range. A full entertainment wall with stone tile, electric fireplace, built-in shelving, and integrated lighting is typically in the $6,000 to $15,000+ range depending on wall size and finishes selected. We quote every project individually — call us and describe your wall, and we'll give you a realistic number.
Can I see examples of your work?
Absolutely. Follow Eary Construction on social media to see our project photos, or ask us to show you our portfolio when you call. We document our builds and are proud to show homeowners the range of what we've done across San Antonio.
